After publishing 15 Fan-tastic Facebook Post Ideas to help banish writer’s block, we’ve had plenty of people asking “well what can I Tweet about?”
You know that to make Twitter work, you need to be a consistent Tweeter.
You also know that you only have 140 characters, so you want to make them count…but, you don’t want to go into brain meltdown figuring out what to say!
And you know that just like Facebook, Twitter is about sharing inspiring and interesting content, not about tooting your own horn in every tweet.
Here’s our Top 20 Tweet Cheat Sheet ideas for creating some sweet tweets…
- Share, share, share. Whether it’s a cracking article you’ve just come across, an interesting stat or study, a useful resource you use, a great website, an app that makes your life easier, something industry-related your customers or peers would also get a kick out of, be social and share! It’s what Twitter is all about.
- Mix it up. Using different forms of media such as videos and pictures will keep your Tweets fresh and engaging. If you’ve spotted something on YouTube, or you’ve uploaded something yourself that’s inspiring, amazing or funny then tweet it.
- Make them laugh. Retweet something that made you laugh or write your own joke…just make sure it is funny!
- Quick quotes. Most people love a good inspirational quote – just make sure it is useful and at least a bit relevant, not just a world of cheesiness!
- What do you think about…? Just like Facebook, Twitter is a great way to get opinions. So by using a relevant question you can start a conversation. Just make sure you respond!
- Congratulations to us! Have you just won an award, landed a huge deal, been mentioned on an impressive website or social media account, or got some great feedback from a customer? Tweet it!
- Prizes, discounts and freebies. Who doesn’t love winning, getting something cheaper or even better, getting something for free. Give your followers the inside tip on how they can get any of the above and you’ll be popular. Just make sure you keep your direct sales tweets to a minimum.
- Give something away. Whether it’s a free PDF, ebook, guide, stats or reports, let your followers know about it.
- Blog it up. Twitter’s a great way to get more people reading your blog, just don’t tweet the link 100 times daily! You can also Tweet links to old posts that were popular. It’s all about driving more traffic to your website.
- We’d love to see you at…If you’re going to be attending an upcoming event, whether it’s a trade show, fundraiser or charity function, let your followers know. You can also publicise other events that are happening locally, nationally or even ones happening online, on TV or radio.
- Guess what I learnt? If you’ve been to a great event, then share the gems and pearls of wisdom that you took away from it.
- Announce breaking news. Stay on top of what’s happening in your industry or field and let everyone know about it. If people see you as a source of the latest news, they’ll pay attention.
- Predict the future. No we’re not asking you to gaze into your crystal ball, but if you think something is on the horizon then tweet about it and you’ll be able to say ‘you heard it here first’.
- Provide expert tips. If you want to be seen as an expert in your field, provide expert tips! Help your followers to use your products or services the best way they can and you’ll build your credibility.
- Behind-the-scenes access. As long as you don’t do this every moment of the day (no-one cares if you’re eating a ham sandwich!), real-time updates of what you and your staff are up to can be really interesting. A lot of people love getting a glimpse of what’s happening behind-the-scenes.
- Put a staff member in the spotlight. Similar to number 15, by talking about someone who works for you, your followers get to go behind the brand name and connect on a more personal level. It’s also a great reminder that your business is run by real people, not machines!
- Say thank you. Make your followers feel like an asset to your business by thanking them for sharing, commenting or being one of your followers.
- Answer a burning question. If someone asks you a question – answer them! Chances are there will be more than one person with the same query.
- Make a suggestion. Whether it’s a blog, RSS Feed, Facebook profile or another Twitter account you love, suggest for your followers to get on board.
- Track your success. Just like we said for Facebook, the easiest way to know what to Tweet about is to know which ones got the most attention and the most retweets. You may not need to reinvent the wheel!
Last tips:
- If you come across a great Tweet, make a note and use the same technique!
- Want to be retweeted? Make sure you leave some space available.
- Avoid text speak – if you can’t squeeze proper words into your 140 characters or less, go back to the drawing board.
- Use bit.ly to shorten your links. It comes with built-in stats and bit.ly is trusted by the Twitter community
- If you’re retweeting somebody else, always credit the original tweeter.
Never forget…
Twitter is a public network.
The things you say are theoretically visible to all 200m+ users on and are also tracked by Google and other search engines.
So, create some great tweets, but just be mindful that what you say is likely to be there for the world to see forever. It all comes back to having a watertight Social Media Strategy!
